Navaratri Celebrations in the new Normal World

Time hasn’t stopped and Navaratri has already come. But my favorite cousin Arjun is not able to come from the US due to the pandemic. Do you know why he is my favorite? He is just 3 months younger than me, that’s why. So, is the case with my other cousins as well. My parents have planned the family get-together during this year Navarathri. The plans were made in 2019 itself and all my cousins were supposed to join me in Chennai for the Golu fun and then later fly to Jamshedpur to join the Pandal hopping fun. But, this pandemic has spoiled all our plans. So, how are your “Navaratri celebrations in the new Normal World“?

But, I do have a better idea as to how to celebrate Navarathri with my cousins this year. We will not only be having Golu but also do pandal hopping. Wondering how that’s possible? We are going into the virtual model, as the entire world is moving and thriving on the zoom calls, we have decided that we will have the celebrations on the zoom call. We, cousins, have split the tasks between all of us so that each of us can handle one area completely. My task is to compile a list of books that all of us can read to understand the culture and traditions behind Navarathri. Only if we understand those minute details, then our “Navaratri Celebrations in the new normal world” would make more sense, isn’t it? I took my mom’s help in choosing books for all my cousins. Want to know which books I had picked up? My mom says that:

Books are the best gifts to children of all ages, as they open the windows to the world.

1. Golu Festival of Dolls from Story Weaver

This book (“Golu Festival of Dolls” from Story Weaver) is for the youngest of my cousins. He is just two years old and my aunt has started reading books to him at night, before going to bed. So, my mom thought that this book would be interesting to him, as it would explain to him the concept behind Golu. Storyweaver books are always good to read.

Golu Festival of Dolls from Story Weaver
Golu Festival of Dolls

2. Celebrate Durga Puja with Me! by Shoumi Sen

This book introduces the Bengali version of Navaratri celebrations, which is in fact new to me. So I read this book as soon as my mom ordered it for my other younger cousin. It’s a fabulous book and now I have to tell my cousins in Jamshedpur to take us for a virtual visit to Pandals this time, as we cant go for pandal hopping. Pandals are a unique concept for people in Chennai. I would love to visit them sometime in the future. This book is fun to read for young kids. I wish I saw this book earlier itself. I like the tone in which the story is narrated in a rhyming way.

3. Amma, tell me about Durga Puja by Bhakti Mathur

Amma Tell Me series books are really fun to read when we just start reading. I had this book with me for a long time. So, I advised my mom to pick up this book for the next youngest cousin, who is 5 years old. Let him also start reading books like me, starting with these series.

4. Devi’s The Mother Goddesses from OM Books

One of my elder cousins wanted to understand in detail about the nine avatars of Maa Durga and the reason why she had taken 9 different rupams during this Navaratri period. So, my mom got “Devi’s The Mother Goddesses” book from OM Books for her on Amazon. I read this book last year. This book introduces all the avatars of Mother Goddess in an entertaining and informative way. I liked the information about Ambika in this book. That was the first time, I heard the name Ambika actually. This book depicts the deeper meanings hidden in the Navaratri celebrations.

5. Ravana refuses to die by Rustom Dadachanji.

My mom told me that it’s one of those detective stories centered around Dussehra or Navaratri celebrations. My elder cousins are really into reading books that are full of puzzles or detective series. My mom gifted them her friend’s detective stories a few months back. So she picked up this book for them. Those books still seem boring and heavy for me. That’s why I am yet to read this book. This book is available on Amazon.

6. Let’s Celebrate Navaratri! (Nine Nights of Dancing and Fun)

Let's Celebrate Navaratri book from Amazon
Lets Celebrate Navaratri!

This is one book, which describes Navaratri celebrations across India. As our country is really huge, the Navaratri is celebrated in different forms across the country. This book though primarily concentrates on the celebrations in Gujarat, it gives a brief idea about different forms of celebrations across India.

7. Last but not least, my book about Indian Mythological Friends.

I and my mom have released our second book, “My Friends from Indian Mythology” – Not So Popular only two days back. This book is a must-read if one wants to get introduced to various not so popular characters in Indian Mythology. Of course, we are planning to give it as a gift to all my cousins, through Amazon Kindle. Here is the book in case if you guys want to read it.

Of course, this is just one part of the work. In case if you want to join us in our “Navaratri celebrations in the new normal world“, then you need to follow my blog for the next posts. There are a lot of aspects which my cousins have covered to make this festival very exciting for all of us. We are roping even our grandparents into these celebrations. Also, we do have new guests this time. Can you guess who they are? They are none other than the famous, #Nina and #Nana from Nina Nana comic series and #Ambu maami. Won’t it be exciting to meet them and talk to them about their experiences during this festive season? Then follow me and my mom’s friends Lavanya, Kanika, and Jayanthi blogs for further updates.

Book Review: Maya’s Magical Adventures by Malcolm McCoard

I started reading this book along with my 8-year-old boy. He likes Magic and believes in it seriously and waits for fairies and angels in the night to fly by. So this is a perfect book for him. He loved the fact that this entire story has developed by the author along with his daughter. My kid also tells me stories, which I blog/write about. So that camaraderie feeling made him read the book Maya’s Magical Adventures.

Genre: Children’s Fiction, Fantasy, Adventures

Author: Malcolm McCoard

Illustrator: Maya McCoard

Available at: Amazon, Good Reads

Maya's Magical Adventures: A fantasy comedy for young adults by [Malcolm McCoard, Maya McCoard, Elizabeth McCoard]

My Thoughts:

The story sets off at a fast pace and gets really real. The characters and their quirky mannerisms. The way Cat “Mishcheif” rolls his eyes to show the disinterest, all this pulled my kid really into the book. He couldn’t believe initially that a book can also talk. As the story progressed, he started looking forward to more discussions with the Book. Developing a character for a book and making him opinionated about everything is really a genuine idea and was well received by the kids. The speaking magical door is also another attraction.

We even liked the idea of using toothbrushes instead of brooms. To date, all the magic and witch movies which we have seen have used only the brooms. Naming the toothbrush as “Blue” since he is a boy was very witty. My kid liked the way Blue behaves in the story. Also, the riddles that were strewn across the story, where Maya has to solve them before progressing on her journey into the magical land were exciting and funny. We liked to solve them on our own.

Overall, this book is a fun read for both kids and adults alike. Though this book is slated for 10 years and above, it can be given to kids about 7 years who are slowly graduating to chapter books. As it’s filled with easy language and also funny incidents and riddles, the book will entice those kids to read further. They might take a little longer than older kids. But it’s fine.

Apart from the story, the drawings in the book have attracted my son. In fact, he was mentioning that he should follow the author’s daughter example and draw for his next set of stories.

I’d say lean forwards for backwards, backwards for forwards, up for down, down for up…, or at a Push…” paused Mischeif

The book is full of such play with the words. Play with the words is what fascinates the young readers who are aged 7 and above. So no wonder, my kid got attracted to this book.

My recommenation about Maya’s Magical Adventures

Rating: 5 out of 5.

As a parent, I loved this book as it’s given a chance to learn about the magical world. The story is perfect with ease in the language and correct grammar is used. Parents can happily give this book to their kids and can relax. As the author has given utmost care to every detail that got into the book. So, I don’t have to worry about the language used in the book or about anything.

Note: I got the free copy of this book from Booktasters in return for a free and honest review from my end. The views mentioned here are completely my own and are not influenced by anyone.

Pareeksha Movie Review – Why Every Child Should Watch?

We watched the Pareeksha as per our earlier weekend plans. ZEE5,  nor Prakash Jha has disappointed us with the movie. My mommy is so very apt in picking up this movie as the weekend pick. There is so much that one can get to learn from the movie Pareeksha. Here is my Pareeksha Movie Review.

Movie Review:

Pareeksha as the name suggests is a real exam for a kid by name Bulbul. Whether Bulbul would be able to appear his exams at school along with the exams thrown by life.  The movie starts in a small-town Ranchi in Bihar. My mom reminded me that this is the same place we flew down to last year while traveling to Jamshedpur to meet my cousins. So, this movie got more interesting for me for that reason.

I was more attracted to the child actor. His original name is Shubham and he plays the role of Bulbul perfectly. Bulbul in this movie Pareeksha reminded me of my school friend. Bulbul character says so much with his body language just like my other friend. Bulbul’s father and mom are also good. Adhil Hussain played the role of Bulbul father’s role and Priyanka Bose played the role of Bulbul’s mom. Sanjay Suri comes as the cop in this movie and he has a limited role to play. But his role is also critical for the movie. After seeing the way, Sanjay Suri has enacted the role, I was thinking of how it would be if I also become a cop. When I told my mom this, she told me that we need to do a lot of hard work. My mom says that all the actors have done good justice to their roles.

The movie editing and dialogues are good. I don’t understand Hindi much but could sit through the entire movie as it was never boring. We can follow the entire movie very clearly and my mom used to always translate at the place I was not able to understand. That’s really a plus point for this movie.

Why Every Child Should watch Pareeksha?

My mom says that every child should watch the movie Pareeksha for the following reasons and I tend to agree with her.

  1. This movie shows the hard work all the parents put in so that they can give good life to their kids.
  1. This movie also teaches that being Humble and expressing Empathy are always great virtues. The person who really wins, in the end, is the person who is humble about his start.
  1. Having dreams is not a crime and we all should strive to achieve those dreams.
  1. Hard work is the only path for success.
  1. Peer Pressure will always be there, and we kids shouldn’t buckle under the peer pressure to do the wrong things. We need to stand strong on our beliefs.

So, friends, this is my Pareeksha movie review. I liked this movie a lot and am planning to recommend it to all my friends. What about you, have you watched the Pareeksha? If not, please do watch it on ZEE5 immediately.

Must Watch Movie for all kids – Pareeksha

ZEE5 once again is coming up with another list of wonderful movies that are to be released in August once again. This time, we picked up a movie instead of a cartoon series for me as the weekend movie to watch. That movie is Pareeksha and is supposed to be about a kid and his dream of becoming big in real life. Read further to know, why it’s a must-watch movie for all kids.

Pareeksha as the name suggests is a real exam for a kid by name Bulbul. Whether Bulbul would be able to pass his exams at school along with the exams thrown by life. This movie is written and directed by the well-known director Prakash Jha. He is known for his famous films like Aarakshan, Satyagraha, Rajaneeti, Jai Gangajaal, etc.

Shravmusings, Movie Review, Movies, ZEE5 Movies, Pareeksha, Pareeksha movie review, Chennai Bloggers, kid blogger

This Pareeksha movie is based on the real-life of former DGP of Bihar, Shri Abhiyanandan His success story proves that despite all the hardships faced in life, still there is some hope for the poor and downtrodden in India. And they can really fulfill their dreams if tried hard. Though he was working as the Police Officer, he used to teach freely for the kids from the poor economic background. By introducing the beauty of education to the children in the Naxal infested areas in Bihar, he got a whole lot of changes in society. And that is why his success story has become famous.   This movie is all about a rickshaw puller, Buchi (portrayed by Adil Hussain) and his kid Bulbul (portrayed by Shubham).  As Buchi drops few kids to a good school, he starts dreaming that his bright kid also should go to a school like that so that he can achieve something big in life and will not stagnate like him as Rickshaw puller in future. Bulbul is an incredibly talented young kid but was forced to stay back in the class due to their poor economic conditions.

The reason why I picked up this movie for my kid is that he treats everything lightly and is not serious about anything. He does not even know what hardships really are.  He thinks the entire life would be a bed of flowers for him. So, I felt that this movie would show the real hard side of life.  As there are a lot of other kids out there who really struggle to get a decent education. This kind of realistic movie is needed to show the hard-hitting truths about our society to our children. That’s the main reason why I feel that this is a must-watch movie for all kids

This movie has a wonderful star cast. Adhil Hussain, Sanjay Suri, Priyanka Bose, and the child actor, Shubham. I saw from the trailer that all of them are acting with such ease and in fact, competing. The trailer is a must watch and you can watch the trailer by clicking here.

So, now you know why I had picked up my weekend movie as Pareeksha. So now what about you? Let me know your comments on Pareeksha after watching the movie.

Mapa Story is my New Buddy – What about you?

How is this #Lockdown treating you all? I hope by now you all would have got busier with the Online Classes and Schools, isn’t it? I still find so much free time in my hands even after my online classes as well. Reading books all alone is so boring and it gets a little lonely after a while. But luckily, I found a new buddy called Mapa Story. My mommy got to know about this app and downloaded it for me. Now you are wondering what’s so special in this Mapa Story app, isn’t it?

Mapa Story App:

It’s a new app on Google Playstore that my mommy got a chance to review and she showed it to me to test this app. As the title suggests this app is full of stories. They are not typical videos of someone narrating the stories on youtube. Its a story actually told by one of the parents or grandparents to their children using the books. We can easily relate to the voices and feel like listening more.

Source: Mapa Story

Also to top it, there is a wide variety of stories including Mythology, Education, Fairytales, Knowledge stories, and a lot more. The person narrating the story would show the book and recite the story. So, in case if you want we can try to outsmart the narrator by trying to read the story before him. I always do that as it gives me pleasure to see the narrator always reading the stories in a very slow and soothing manner just like my aunty in the school. So, this app is giving me a chance to practice slowing my talking speed, and hence making my daddy a happier one, as he always says that I speak like a bullet train.

The additional advantage of this app is that the stories are narrated in both English and Hindi. As I belong to a non-Hindi speaking city, my cousins always tease me for my pronunciation in Hindi. So, this app is giving me exposure to proper Hindi and I am planning to develop my Hindi speaking skills using this app. Isn’t it wonderful?

MaPa Story, Shravmusings, Storytelling app, Educational app

Now that’s not all, there is one more surprise in this app. We can ask our parents/grandparents to record the stories while they are reading them for us. That’s a wonderful feature, isn’t it? A lot of people can hear our voices and enjoy the story narrated to us. Even we kids can record the stories as a special surprise to our parents. I liked this surprise element a lot.

Now you all must be thinking that then this app must be really expensive, isn’t it? No, it’s not the case, my mommy says it’s budget-friendly and she is happy with that. You can check the details and download it here. She has subscribed to this app for me on our mobile phone (both me and my mommy’s) so that I can hear the stories whenever I feel bored at the house. Honestly, my mommy is not worried about the screen time while I am using this app as I can just lock the screen to listen to the stories. So, our screen time restrictions won’t apply for this app and at any given point of time, listening to stories improves our knowledge. So mt mom and I are completely happy with this app.

I really feel like my granddad is narrating the stories when I hear some of the stories narrated by old people. I am not able to fall asleep without listening to a story on this app daily. My mom thinks that I am falling asleep faster these days. So now, did you understand why Mapa Story has become my best buddy?

TikTok #ShabashIndia is unleashing creative side of kids

TikTok, Sponsored Post, Shravmusings, TikTok Videos, TikTok Kids

During this global lockdown, staying indoors with kids and managing/channelizing their high energies is the biggest challenge for most of the parents. TikTok has started a new campaign initially called #ShabashIndia to increase the morale of the health workers and other primary people helping us to maintain the lockdown. But over a period of time, this campaign got converted to a wonderful stage to showcase the talents. One can see a lot of creative videos trending online on TikTok in the form of viral videos.

Initially, most of the people used it to showcase their funny side only in the TikTok videos. But once these videos started going viral, the other angles started surfacing. Most people started using it to showcase their creative side as well.

Some people started showing their DIY’s and their expertise on various topics like dance, music, and a lot more. Obviously, when everyone is staying at home and if mom and dad are active TikTokers, why would the kids be left behind? They also started using it to show their creative side, by uploading their dance videos, music videos. Even their karate, or physical exercise videos.

Initially, my mom thought that it’s very unsafe for kids like, yours truly. But later when all my friends started using TikTok kid’s version of the app, I told my mom and she also installed it for me. The child-friendly TikTok app is all safe for the kids. My mom has got all the flexibility to set the parental controls for me on that app. So, now I am able to see my friend’s videos and am also able to upload mine also without any hassle on this app. Of course, the uploading has to be done by my parents only, not by me due to the security features. I had made a lot of new friends on TikTok now and I follow them too for the latest videos.

There are a funny parent and kids dance challenges that went viral on TikTok sometime back and I would watch them regularly. Also, lots of kids are uploading their dance videos on TikTok across the world. So, I get to know the various trends in dancing.

The best is the funny dog and cat videos on TikTok. They are really funny and I love to watch them a lot.

Have you guys ever seen the TikTok trending videos? If not, it’s already too late, as you are missing so much fun. Please do login and watch the TikTok funny videos on the kid’s app and let me know your thoughts.

Plot:

This serial is a Marathi family drama, about a child prodigy Sindhu and her struggles. Despite the hardships she has faced, she continues her educational journey and achieves her dreams. This serial is set up in the pre-Independence era. My mom wanted me to watch this serial, so that I can understand how tough the life is during that time.

This is a costume rich drama, which lime lights some of the social evils of that Pre-Independence era along with the plight of the girls in that era. Sindhu is seen as the independent and progressive thinking girl, who tends to question the regressive ideas put forward by the society at that time.  This unique concept is from the multifaceted personality Srirang Godbole, which is really a different one when compared to all the other serials we see normally on the TV. No wonder, it’s the highly popular show on the Marathi T.V.

And other important characters are assayed by Srihari Abhyankar, Ved Ambre, Saurabh Sutar, Gauri Kiran, Shaswati Pimpalikar and Pooja Mithabawkar

Review:

There are a lot of points to be noted from this serial for everyone. Especially about how the society used to function at that point of time. The following are the key take away points for me.

  1. Never Stop Dreaming:  Sindhu shows how powerful your dreams can be if we work hard towards them. During the pre-Independence era, girls were not supposed to study. But Sindhu always wanted to study, and she fights with everyone to continue her studies.
  2. Keep Learning new things: Sindhu is always keen on learning new things. She keeps learning one thing or the other till the end. In fact, she even pushes the elder ladies in her house to keep learning new things.
  3. Be Passionate: One needs to follow his or her passion and try to excel in that. Sindhu’s story is a good example for the same. How she fought her marriage to study.  Also, how she convinced her family so that she can continue her education even after marriage.
  4. Stand for Right causes: Sindhu showcases the moral courage and strong will and always questions if she thinks that something is wrong. I think we all should know how to stand up for our own rights.
  5. Fight off the Negative forces: There will always be few negative people in everyone’s life. We should never let their negative thoughts influence us. It’s always good to fight those negative forces and make them see the goodness. or to stay away from them.

Lastly, I liked the title song which is nice and melodious, and that tune stayed in mind for a long time. I even liked those costumes of that era. But I guess they are too heavy to wear them daily. What say, folks?  So. please do watch the Sindhu on ZEE5 and let me know your thoughts on the same.

Book Review – EBook Marvellous Rhymes

One of my mommy’s blogger friend has published her EBook along with our book. So, my mom asked me whether I would be interested in reading that book. Believe me, initially I was reluctant to open and read those printed sheets my mom has given to me. Why would a seven-year-old kid be reading rhymes tell me? Who has that time, I am so very busy with lots of stuff to do.

This week, it was very hot and sultry in Chennai, and while sitting in the A.C. room, with nothing much to do, I opened this folder and started reading this book. Trust me, this book got into me, right from the first page itself. I have never heard about Archanids till date. When I started reading further I got to know that our common spiders are also called as Archanids. I came to understand so much about those common spiders. They seem to have 8 eyes. Can you beleive it? Till now, I thought that it has only 8 legs. So now I wonder if it has to wear spectacles like my dad, how many does an Archanid need?

EBook Review, Marvellous Rhymes, Jyotsna Atre, Blogchatter Ebook, Ebook carnival, shravmusings, kid blogger, book reviews

There are so many animals that aunty has covered, with lots of fun facts about each one of them. There was a time, when a bird’s feathers are used as currency. There are animals which change their gender. How I wish, we humans have also that power. The fun doesn’t stop with one animal. I read about so many new animals, whose names also I couldn’t pronounce properly first time, when I tried.

Wait, wait, the best is yet to come…the message on the “Social Distancing”

“All Animals bright and beautiful,

are telling us something,

only if we care to stop and listen….”

From Marvellous Rhymes by Jyotsna Atre

I wanted to ask Jyostna Aunty – how come she is able to read my mind and pen it down here in this book. I always feel that the passing clouds in the sky, the falling rain drops are talking to me. Even the flying bumble bee, is trying to tell me something, but before it comes near me, I get scared and run away into another room. That’s a different story all together.

This is really a magical book with colourful illustrations and backgrounds. The information is given in terms of nice tips and poems that any kid would love to read. Overall, this book is awesome.

My Recommendation:

So this is one book, which I found very interesting and planning to recommend to my aunties, to keep this in our school library after the school reopens. So that my friends can also read it and have all the fun.

About the Author:

As told earlier, the author of this book is Jyostna Atre (aunty). She is a blogger friend to my mommy and thats how I came to know about her book. It seems, she has written multiple childrens books. So I look forward to read them all.

Book Availability:

This book is available for free download for a limited period of time at the Blogchatter Ebook Library. You can download this book here.

Must watch Bhandbudh Aur Budbak Series On ZEE5 Kids

Due to the school closure and lockdown, we are spending our entire day in the house only. Suddenly, my granny got the idea that I should improve my Hindi speaking skills. So, she started researching for good Hindi shows that would interest me. Then she hit upon ZEE5 web series for Kids. ZEE5 has started a new platform especially for kids. And surprisingly, it has various genres of content like top animated movies, adventure, action, comedy, superheroes, mythology and even DIY’s. This is like another treasure trove for kids like my favorite Disney Junior.

Can you imagine, the best part, there are various shows on this platform in various languages like Hindi, Telugu, Tamil apart from Hindi, so we all can sit together and watch. This platform would help me in improving my Hindi. My granny has decided the series – “Bandbudh Aur Budbak Ke Bakwas Bakbak” to start my Hindi training. I would say that she has done an excellent job in picking up the right series this time. We already watched the popular series Mental Hood on ZEE5.

ZEE5 Kids, ZEE5, Bandhbudh aur Badbudh, Shravmusings, sponsored post

Why did this story line interest me?

This series is about two school going kids, Badrinath and Buddhadeb. Their behavior reminded me of my two friends in the school, A and S. Both are exactly very naughty and behave funnily just like Badrinath and Buddhadeb. Their nicknames are also very cute. Bandbudh and Budbak. The episodes one after the other captures all the funny and troublesome moments these two guys get caught into. Their principal is very strict, and these two kids always get into trouble with their principal. The cartoons representing these kids are also cute in a way. So no wonder me and my granny got hooked to this series on ZEE5 Kids.

  • The kids in the classroom are very realistic and have given me a sense of how a typical school would operate, as our Montessori school will not have any benches and chairs to sit and the teachers don’t keep changing for different subjects. .
  • The Hindi used in this series is simple enough for me to understand. OfCourse the visuals are also helping me. So, after watching three/four episodes, I felt that my Hindi vocabulary is improving.
  • The scenes are very funny, and the dialogues are very easy to understand and can be easily related by a school going kid like me.
  • Just like how I forget my things and at times don’t follow the rules, these two kids also do the same.
  • I really liked the Yoga teacher and how he was singing a nice song on yoga there.

Top 5 Reasons to watch Bhandbudh aur Budbak:

As per my mom, Bhandbudh aur Budbak is apparently a complete Indian show built right from the scratch in India. So, I liked the fact that someone out there has understood the mindset of the Indian kids and made a show out of it.

  • Bhandbudh aur Budbak represents any two typical school going kids and are very easily relatable. Their friendship is good, and everyone deserves a good friend like that.
  • Their Hindi language is very simple, and this series increases our Hindi vocabulary.
  • Now that most of the schools are very strict and we are not able to go to our schools on cycles, this series is a sort of eye opener for all of us as to how much fun we all can have in the schools.
  • These two kids are very witty and naughty, but at the same time they teach us the important life lessons like what would happen to us in case if we don’t follow the rules in the school, how to take the casual teasing in a jovial way, helping friends during the time when they need us, etc.
  • The animation is very good and improves our creative thinking power as well, as we try to replicate those drawings at home

The best part is that most of the episodes are only for 10-minute duration, which would allow me to watch multiple shows in a short span of time before my TV watching time gets over. So don’t forget to watch the Bhandbudh aur Bandbudh series on ZEE5 Kids. This is one #NonStopBachFun for all the kids during this forced school closure and lock down. What are you waiting for? Please tell me what is your favorite show on ZEE5 Kids?
